Cheap Flights and Travel to Thailand from US?

I am going to Thailand at the end of June through July. Does anyone have advice for the cheapest place to find tickets to Thailand from FL without flying 40+ hours?
In country, we are interested in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a quieter beach not too far from Bangkok. Any suggestions on hotels, sites, and activities? Thank you in advance!

  1. Thai Air flies direct to Thailand from several places in the U.S. Thai Air is also probably the most expensive carrier to use too!

You don’t mention where you are flying from. If you are on the West Coast you have more airlines to choose from. Several Asian carriers fly from SFO and LAX. From Boston to BKK it is about 23 hours of flying going through Japan/Korea or Taiwan. (Not including the time waiting in airports for your flights!) If you are on the East Coast and fly through Europe it is a little shorter flying time but costs more money! You did ask for cheap flights – cheaper flights take longer than more direct flights like Thai Air!

You can help yourself to get a cheaper ticket by being flexible on your departure date. Check the price a few days before and a few days after your desired date for any price changes. Flights leaving on Fridays, weekends and holidays may be more expensive too! June through early September are the most expensive for flights to Asia but in Thailand the hotels are on low season pricing.

Always check the airline’s websites for any special prices. You should check the airline’s websites to establish a price that the wholesalers and bucket shops have to beat – otherwise you wouldn’t know if you got a good deal or not! There are some good prices when there are cancellations because tour groups cancel out and the airline wants to fill those seats quickly! Check the websites often!

Remember to choose your seats ahead of time so you don’t get the crappy seats. Get up often during the flight and bring a couple books to read. Complaining about the long flight doesn’t make the flying any easier. If you have an elite card (silver or gold, etc. frequent flier card) use that airline so you can get bonus miles and more perks like priority boarding and better seats and free upgrades!

Plan on spending a few days in Bangkok at the beginning of your trip and end up there the last night of your trip so you don’t have any conflicts with connecting flights. In Bangkok get a hotel near the Skytrain route so you can use that transportation service.

You can take the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai if you want. This will save you from paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok. Nearest beach to Bangkok is Pattaya/Jomtien. The bus to Pattaya leaves from the Ekamai bus station (off the Skytrain stop) and will cost around 118 baht and take 2 hours. Only buy your ticket from the bus station.

    Good luck.

  2. For a flight, you might try American–they may have a direct flight from Miami to Tokyo or someplace in the Far East. Delta, operated by Korean Air, has a flight from Atlanta to Korea and then on to Bangkok that is about 24 hours total time. Don’t forget that Thailand is 12 hours ahead of the east coast so the flight may look longer on paper because they use local time. Check out farecompare.com for flights and prices–best site I’ve found yet. As for a quiet beach near Bangkok, try Pattaya. Pattaya has the reputation for the “party” location of the world but it’s trying to shed the image and has quite a lot to do. Pattaya is the beach that the people from Bangkok head for if they just have a long weekend/couple days.

  3. I went through orbitz just a few weeks ago and it was about $900 through united airlines from san francisco to tokyo 2 hour layover and then tokyo to bangkok. It wasnt that bad and was actually the best flight Ive ever been on. I have flown many places but it was the best trip and im afraid of flying but this time it was ok. China Airlines and Korea Air have some of the worst records in aviation history when it comes to safety. I dont know if thats a factor to you and im not tryin to scare you but it was very important to me and then I found out that the Delta flights from usa to asia are actually operated by China Airlines. Thats why I chose to go with who I went with. Im from Florida originally and I dont think there are flights out of Florida. I think you have to fly to New York or Cali but I could be wrong. For that, I would go with southwest, They are good for domestic flights and very cheap(and for paranoid me, very safe). After you go to Thailand you will not love orlando anymore. I recommend you go to phi phi island. That is a must I think, you can take a train from bangkok to surat thani and then surat thani to phuket and then a boat from phuket to phi phi. You can work out the boat with any tour agency in phuket and it should cost between 900-1200 baht to be on a big ocean cruiser and you can work out the train and bus tickets to surat thani and phuket at the train station in bangkok. I recommend you go to kanchanaburi and see erawan waterfalls, they are the most beautiful thing in all of Thailand i think. you can take a bus there by going to the southern bus station in bangkok. I recommend you go to chiang mai and enjoy the trip there and maybe see some of the smaller provinces nearby like pha yao or nan. If you want to stay as cheap as you can, you can easily find real dumps on khao san road in bangkok and other places for as cheap as $2 a night. For cheaper nicer places that are as cheap as you can get without living wildly is fuji hotel in bangkok off suriwong road near sukhumvit, crystal inn in phuket town (about 400 baht), and on phi phi there is a place right next to the big garden on the island (I forgot the name) but its about 200 baht a night thats not so bad. I also stayed at a place that was awesome there (I forgot the name) but it was real expensive at 2000 baht, but its the nicest on that island and faces the nearby island of phi phi leh. I recommend you go to phi phi leh, thats the best thing in all of thailand to see I think even if it is over run with tourists now.

  4. Cheap flights to Thailand. D K Travel In Texas. Ask For BEA.
Also Get the Ny Times Or The Big nespaper in NY. Get at Libary. They Have the best Prices. Thai Airline Are the most expensive . I would say now that you could get ticket for around $1,400 US. Eva air. China air, Sometimes Korean Air.They are the cheapest. Avoid Northwest Their the worst airline in the universe.

  5. By the fact you are loooking for cheap tickets will almost certainly mean going the long way around on the flight….

You can fly direct to BKK but this will cost you more money…so you have to decide….is it speed or is it cost you want to save….

to quote a Thai saying…..”Up to YOU”
