I live in Thailand. The VIP super sleeper air-con buses from Chiang Mai to Bangkok cost 20 USD one way. They are very comfortable and cover the trip in 9 hours.

The non-air-con bus doing the same trip costs around 8 USD, takes around 20 hours and is very uncomfortable.

Take your pick or choose one of the 3 classes of buses that lie in between these two.

Air Asia offers flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok and from Bangkok to Phuket for less than $40.00 US each way inc. tax, and has many flights a day to these destinations. You might also check NokAir, Bangkok Airways and 12Go Airlines among others. Buses in Thailand are the cheapest way to go, you can get a very comfortable air-conditioned bus between provinces, for a few hundred baht to travel every few hundred kilometers or so. Unless you travel by bus on Friday afternoons or holidays you should have little problem just showing up at the bus station, buying a ticket and going.
Have fun.

There are lots of buses and they're very cheap. You're better off booking buses once you get to Thailand.
